Coach Introduction
Purpose
The purpose of this meeting is to familiarize parents and players with the guidelines and expectations of Courtside United Basketball Club, and to provide an overview of your participation in the upcoming season. For our program to be successful – and our experience enjoyable - the mission, values, conduct, and guidelines of the club must be followed and enforced. We desire to surround our club with high-character players, coaches, and families who reflect values such as integrity, service, and leadership. Thank you for your cooperation!
Overview
When you reviewed the program overview sheet provided before registering with the club, you noticed two common themes: Player Development and Character Development
Courtside 360 Philosophy – Beyond Basketball
In addition to athletic development… “360” programming contains our core principles to a well- rounded athlete (Character, Mindset, Work Ethic), philosophy to complete development (Athletically, Mentally, Socially, Spiritually), and teaches competitive edge. We believe in instilling the resilient mindset of finding joy in the process before realizing the results.
Courtside 360 Programming – Academy, Events, Club Teams
Courtside offers multiple year-round player development platforms led by certified coaches and trainers with college/pro playing experience. Club members receive priority access and discounts to the Academy (private 1-on-1 training) and Events (clinics/camps).
Setting + Instruction + Difference
Positive Coaching Environment. Instruction which develops self-discipline, builds self-confidence, enhances communication, and instills leadership, responsibility, and accountability. Player development is our focus, not win-at-all-cost. It’s more than just playing games!
Courtside United Culture
Our teams are a family unified with a purpose bigger than basketball. We train, compete, and grow as athletes and individuals. Courtside is about complete development - making each person better - so that their influence makes others better. Character first, train and play second, impact always.
The Experience
We strive to raise the bar on what a quality, enjoyable youth sports experience can be for both the players, coaches, and families part of our club, as well as the facility operators and tournament directors we come in contact with.
Code of Conduct / Commitment
24-Hour Rule: Under no circumstances is a parent/guardian/family member to approach a coach/trainer with a complaint or an evaluation of coaching philosophy during or after practice, or following a game. I will wait 24 hours to communicate any concerns to the head coach.
One Voice Coaching: I will not coach my child from the sidelines during practices and games, realizing that the only voice he/she should be listening to is his/her coach; I should not confuse my child by competing with that voice.
Attendance / Communication: Player attendance at practices, team meetings, and games are required unless an excused absence is approved. In the event a player must be absent, parents will ensure players notify the Coach as soon as possible. Communication is crucial!
Playing Time: Playing time is individually weighted and determined based on the combined evaluation of effort and skill shown in practice, commitment to the program by attendance to practices and games, by an observation of a player’s attitude (Is the player coachable?). Playing time decisions may also be made simply based on game situations pertaining to match ups. In club basketball, playing time is not equally distributed.
Player Contributions: In order to meet deadlines associated with ordering uniforms, registering for leagues and tournaments, renting facilities for practices, and paying staff, player contributions must be paid on time. Courtside covers many of these costs upfront. Therefore, your contribution reimburses us. Players must be current on contributions to remain eligible to participate with their team. Thank you for your commitment to ensure your season runs smoothly and without disruption.
Club Membership Forms: If you have not returned the club paperwork, please contact the Club Director ASAP. Forms include: Player/Parent Contract/Code of Conduct, Financial Commitment, Waiver, Medical Release, Media Consent
Thoughts on Training
“Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.” – John Wooden
We believe true transformation happens from the grind, relationship, accountability and support received through consistent training.
Training is crucial for continuous athletic improvement. If you don’t do anything to work on your game, you will notice, and there will most likely be natural consequences for you and your school team. Be committed to the process.
Don’t assume future success based on prior success or experience. It’s a constant work in progress. A daily grind, a commitment, a lifestyle.
In-game playing experience is definitely beneficial, but not as a replacement for individual player development. As each player improves, so will your team.
Have a purpose and a plan. Track your progress. Challenge yourself. It’s not necessarily the time you put in, it’s what you put into the time.
Improvement is a choice. Tough choices come on lazy days.
Ordinary (Easy) or Extraordinary (Hard) – the difference between these two words is what you choose to do when nobody is watching. Being extraordinary requires discipline. It’s a difficult choice. Not too many people actually choose to be extraordinary. Which will you decide to be?
Respect for you as a person won’t change based on your improvement as a basketball player. Your character is more influential and important than your athletic abilities. Character first. Train and play second. Honor and Impact always. This is the culture of Courtside United Basketball Club.
